MILR: Minimally Invasive Lump Removal
Even if a breast lump is benign, you may still want it removed for comfort, appearance, or peace of mind. Whatever the reason, Bedford Breast Center offers nonsurgical, minimally invasive lump removal (MILR) to our Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Glendale, and Malibu-area patients.
What Is Minimally Invasive Lump Removal?
Our proprietary, minimally invasive procedure involves the use of a small needle or probe. The device is guided by ultrasound imaging, which enables the removal of oil cysts, fat deposits, fibroadenomas, and lumps without disturbing the healthy breast tissue or causing any damage to the surrounding area.
“I had an amazing experience with Dr Richardson. She is a truly talented doctor that really cares about your health and your experience. I’ve been told by two other doctors that the only option I had is to get a surgery done, while Dr Richardson made it clear that she could remove it without a surgery in less than 15 min. And she really did it! That’s called MILR procedure. It was painless and scarless. Highly recommend this clinic. Their staff is amazing!”

Who Is a Good Candidate?
MILR is appropriate for patients with benign (non-cancerous) growths or fibroadenosis (fibrocystic breasts). Benign lumps may result from a naturally occurring growth or changes in the tissue from surgery, unsatisfactory fat grafting, or another cause.
What Are the Benefits of Minimally Invasive Lump Removal?
If you are a candidate for MILR, the procedure requires only minimal downtime and can:
- Preserve breast aesthetics, resulting in a more pleasing outcome.
- Eliminate the need for frequent monitoring in some cases.
- Alleviate concerns about potential breast changes.
An additional benefit is that the procedure is performed using local anesthesia.
What Is the Procedure Like?
After administering a local anesthetic, we insert an extraction device through a tiny incision, minimizing visible scarring afterward. Ultrasound imaging guides the extraction device to quickly target the mass.
Once pinpointed, the mass will be broken down for easier elimination and minimal effect on the surrounding tissue. You can return home soon after your procedure, and most patients resume their regular activities the next day.
What Is Recovery Like?
Small areas typically heal in about 1 to 2 weeks, but larger masses can take up to 4 weeks to heal completely. It is important to recover fully before determining if further treatment is needed. With some larger masses, several sessions may be necessary to achieve the best possible result.
What If I Am Not a Candidate?
Patients with masses that might be cancerous or become cancerous may need to undergo a fine needle aspiration biopsy, core-needle biopsy, or lumpectomy surgery for the safest outcome.
Patients with suspicious or cancerous masses are not candidates for the procedure. We understand the anxiety that any breast mass causes, and we will be with you every step of the way. Our medical center offers a range of diagnostic and breast cancer treatment options, including:
- Ultrasound
- Biopsy
- Lumpectomy
- Breast-conserving mastectomy
- Nipple-sparing mastectomy
- Sensation-preserving mastectomy
No matter the diagnosis, our team is here to provide the personalized care you need while helping you maintain the best version of yourself throughout the treatment process.
